Conner remembers he was, meanwhile, urging both Dillworth and Bill Hoglund to communicate with Alexander as quickly as possible. “I’m begging them, ‘You’ve got to trust the governor of Tennessee. Let me show you how receptive the governor for the State of Tennessee, and the rest of the state of Tennessee, will be if you will just come down here and talk to them. I promise you. I give you my word that they will not let it out. I said the only person to trust is the person I know I can trust beyond anything and that is Lamar Alexander.’ Hoglund didn’t know Lamar; Dillworth didn’t know Lamar. Didn’t know if they could trust him.”

At last Dillworth phoned Conner, asking him to set up a private after-hours meeting with the governor. “Bill Hoglund wanted to look at Lamar Alexander and know that he would be able to trust him to keep his mouth shut.” Around 6:00 p.m. Conner and Hoglund met in the lobby of the Loew’s Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in midtown, across West End Avenue from the Vanderbilt campus. The two of them loaded into Conner’s Cadillac and drove seven miles south to the governor’s residence on Curtiswood Lane.

Until this night, Saturn’s president had not met Tennessee’s governor. With no staff present, Hoglund, Alexander, and Conner sat in the governor’s study, a small wood-paneled library, and Hoglund went through the checklist of components they would need in order for Saturn to land in Tennessee.

They talked for three hours.
